On second thought…

I’m starting to get some new ideas about how to use this blog.

Consider this:
Some years ago I tried an experiment, that is posting progressive drafts of my writing in protected posts on my live journal. This experiment was a complete failure: my drafts were predictably rough and draft-like and didn’t read well, which lead to people commenting on them harshly (and completely accurately) about their various flaws, which served only to make me incredibly insecure about what I was writing.

Note: Never ever show people your first drafts. It’s just a terrible idea.

On the other hand, it occurs to me that if one were writing novels of ideas, as I tend to, one of the problems with such novels is that their ideas are often off-base, or naive or simply badly reasoned. Take your average Star Trek episode, for an easy example.

What might it be like to not preview the actual working drafts on a website, but instead the ideas? And let people (assuming anyone bothers to read or comment, which on the net is often a big if) bat them around, disagree about them, help refine your ideas. Might that not improve your novel-in-progress? Might it not also give people some kind of vested interest in that novel when it finally comes out? A sense of collaboration?

More on this later.

The end

So reading this blog post about how writers shouldn’t write about writing has hammered home the growing fear that this blog was really an elaborate form of naval gazing. When I started it there were some things I wanted to bitch about the short fiction publishing world, and now I’ve bitched about them, and I feel like anything more I could write, specifically about the novel I’m working on, would just be incredibly dull and solipsistic. So I think I’ll be taking the second post of this blog, reformatting it into a Wet Asphalt article and otherwise letting the blog lie fallow. It was a fun experiment, and I’m glad I did it, but it ultimately didn’t work.

Thanks everybody who’s been reading this anyway!
